So Purkh is a beautiful Shabad from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It’s a devotional passage that, when repeated, can really bring you into a state of bliss and gratitude for everything that relationships in your life will bring to you. Think of it as a portal to open up wisdom to you in relationship, whether you are in one or not.
This Shabad is long, complex, and can be a challenge to chant even if your tongue is already familiar with Gurumukhi. But when you start, and you let your mouth speak the syllables, you can feel something begin to shift. Your mind opens to the waves of the heart. Wherever there is a block to the sat nam of your love – of your ability to give love, of your ability to receive love – suddenly becomes very clear to you. It can precipitate some changes, in you, and therefore in others in response to you. If the love you are living is not pure, if there are impurities to be washed away, so purkh can help you see and release them, sifting the river of your heart and separating out the gold. This reaches far beyond the immediate desires of relationship – of wanting things to go a certain way or wanting people to treat you differently. It cuts deep into the ways in which we fail to love and appreciate ourselves.
I am now on day 44 of chanting So Purkh and I have become so grateful to the Shabad itself for what it has shown me about myself and my blocks to love. My love – the love I give and the love I receive from others – is stronger, wider and deeper than the love I received as a child. And that’s a beautiful thing to honour. So I honour the Shabad by continuing the sadhana of chanting it beyond the 40 days into the 90 and beyond – not because I feel ashamed or because I should, but out of love. Because I love myself and others enough to not push myself to do anything out of shame or guilt anymore. It has created a pathway for me to see that I can accept and deeply love people exactly as they are, including myself. For me, that is the true gift of this Shabad.
